I personally love the Infantino Shop and Dine Deluxe. It not only fits all regular cars (Safeway, Wal-Mart, Target, Babies'R'Us, etc.,) but it also fits Costco's carts. It is super easy to put on and off and the bag is detachable with a zipper, so you can just stuff it back in later it you want. It doesn't shrink when you wash it, but air dry it. I get tons of compliments on mine and absolutely love it! I bought mine on amazon.

Know anything about shopping cart covers?

I'm looking into buying one for my 6 month old. The one that looks the most convenient so far is the floppy seat. It does seem kind of ridiculous to pay $40 fr a piece of fabric with some elastic around it though. Does anyone know of any equally good shopping cart covers? Maybe even one a littl cheaper?

simplicity makes a pattern for the floppy seat, its super easy!!!! They work great! I had a cheap one from another brand, it only covered the front and back and had little support.

•    Wear sturdy clothes and shoes.
•    If you're exploring a cave in a cold area, make sure that your clothes will keep you warm and won't lose their insulating properties in case you get them wet.
•    If you're exploring a cave in a warm area, make sure that your clothes are light enough to keep you cool but sturdy enough to protect you from scratches, cuts, and scrapes.
•    For exploring wet caves, rubber boots and neoprene socks are a good idea. For exploring dry caves, wear hiking boots.
•    Wear a helmet. It will protect your head in case you knock it against the top of the cave or against something suspended from the top of the cave. It will also protect your head from falling objects. Choose a helmet mounted with lights and bring extra batteries for the helmet light. Also, bring a backup light source in case your helmet light fails.
•    Wear gloves on all cave exploring trips. Gloves protect your fingers and palms from cuts and scratches, as well as from insect bites.
•    Wear elbow pads and knee pads to protect your joints from scrapes and cuts.
•    Be sure every member of the cave exploring team is paying attention as you go into the cave. Every member of the team is responsible for remembering the way out so that the team doesn't get lost. To help keep you from getting lost, you can mark certain points of the cave with small arrangements of rocks. This is especially useful because the passages within the cave won't look the same when you're going in the opposite direction.

20-40 years worth......wow!

I doubt you will get that as stain free as you want it.
My advice would be to go to the tile store...maybe Home depot or Lowe's and buy some grout paint. This is a vinyl base paint specifically for grout.

It is used when staining is beyond cleaning, or you are just plain tired of the current grout color. Although...applying is somewhat of a tedious chore.
I have done this in my own home...and it will last about 2-10 years depending on the amount of traffic the grout gets. I.E. scrubbing/cleaning, amount of use ina certain area.

For example. The area nearest my kitchen sink is more worn that the area behind my toaster oven.

Well worth the effort though!

i invite you to submit your entry for most alarmest and ridiculous piece of babyproofing equipment, most irrational parenting fear, or dumbest allegedly safety-related reason not to let little joey or suzie do what kids their age have been safey doing for generations.

I had to overcome the irrational fear that if I wasn't there something tragic would happen to them....it wasn't easy to get passed that fear but I now have and my kids have a pretty normal life! I still worry when they are away, but it's tolerable.

Mission - Some Extracts From the Novel

The title of Mission's first chapter is Michael. Here is how it starts ...

Enter Michael, dishevelled and panting. His movements are hurried, agitated and anxious. The kitchen door creaks on its hinges after his disinterested push. It does not close and it swings ajar behind him. In an instant, Michael has crossed the room as if out of a desire to distance himself from some pursuer, but now he is cornered. He stops, thinks for a moment and, realising the futility of trying to run away, returns to the door. He pauses there and, with his head cocked on one side, listens intently, trying to discern the frantic sounds of a shouted argument taking place outside. The sounds are dulled and muffled by echoes, but he stays where he is, afraid to approach them. There are several voices: at least five are shouting in apparent opposition without Any One gaining the ascendancy. Thus all blend to form a single, incoherent and meaningless noise. Trying to listen is pointless and so, with a rueful shake of the head, he advances into the room again, but this time he moves more slowly, with greater resignation, beneath some weight.

He decides to sit but cannot relax. Perched on the very edge of the settee, he leans forward with his head bowed and his hands resting on his knees. He seems poised to act but is powerless. He can do nothing, now. It is too late. Still without success he tries again to make.........

The second chapter, entitled Mulonzya, deals primarily with the local member of parliament, James Mulonzya. But his father, Abel, and son, Charles play significant roles, as does an idealistic administrator, John Mwangangi, recently returned from a successful legal career in London. James and Charles are having dinner with John ...

“So the idea is this,” John continued. “The Father has been told he can use the school bus from Mutune once a week for nothing. All he will do is provide the petrol. The nuns have been very generous to us. Without the vehicle we could do nothing. Near Nairobi there is a group of Europeans who are researching into agricultural techniques for some agricultural research agency. Their farm is very productive but is subsidised, so it does not need to make a profit. Michael has persuaded them to sell us their maize and beans at a cheap rate. We will then bring it to Migwani, Mwingi, Mutonguni or wherever in the lorry and then sell off some of it to people who can afford it until we have covered costs and raised enough money for the next trip and then we will distribute the rest free to people who have nothing.”

“That is illegal,” said Charles curtly. “You need a licence to trade grain.”

“Ah, but we are not trading, Charles...”

“You are selling some of it so surely the law would rule that you are trading.”

“But that's only to get us started. If we can get enough reasonably well-off people to give a hundred shillings each - and regularly - we will be able to carry on without having to sell any of the food. It could then never be argued that we were affecting the traders' business because we would be supplying only those people who had absolutely no money to buy food for themselves.”

“And how would you identify such people? On whose word do you judge whether a particular family can or cannot afford to feed itself?”

“Priests, Chiefs, District Officers, Members of Parliament....”

The argument had suddenly become very serious. “This food... It will only go to Catholics, then?” asked Mulonzya, as usual firmly grasping quite the wrong end of the other's meaning.

“Oh no. To anyone who is in need of it.”

Charles spoke again. His voice spoke the words of a mind already made up. “What you propose is illegal. You need a licence to trade grain. Your school bus is licensed to carry children, not merchandise. Mutune is a government-funded school. I am sure that the Ministry of Education would not like to think that their property is being misused in this way. It is definitely illegal.”

“You forget that I am trained in law. I would certainly be prepared to test what you say in the courts. Anyway, the whole project would be done in the name of the Church. Would you like to be seen to bring about a case against the Roman Catholic Church?”

“If it is illegal we would oppose it,” said Charles. “It would certainly be against our interests. We would have to consult with our legal advisers, of course, but I have no doubt in my mind when I say that, whoever started such a scheme, we would seek to stop it through the courts.”

James Mulonzya almost interrupted his son. “Would you, Mr Mwangangi, a magistrate and civil servant openly break the law?” There was some sincere as well as calculated shock in his voice.

“If the law were to stand in the way of a simple, non-profit-making humanitarian scheme such as this, especially in an area racked with famine, then the law must be changed.” There was a hint of the beginning of anger in John's voice. “If there must be a test case then so be it. Meanwhile people who would have gone hungry will be fed.”

Charles and James Mulonzya began to laugh as he spoke. There was no disrespect, however, only familiarity. Both father and son knew that they had trod this ground far more regularly and successfully than their potential adversary. “Ah John, but now you are talking politics.”

The third chapter, called Janet, is set mainly in London, thirty years on from the other four. When she left college, Janet worked in Migwani's school and was Father Michael's neighbour for two years. For two years after she returned from Africa, she corresponded with Michael, during a period of personal crisis, but she had not met him until unannounced he reappeared in her life.

Turning back into the hall, the pause having done no more than shortened her next step, she looked down to see the long Kashmiri runner reveal herringboned terracotta tiles at its edges abutting the now stripped skirts and Janet Smythe, née Rowlandson, felt a sudden and unexpected twinge of nerves, a slight tightening of the breath alongside the slightest tingle of the spine, the kind of shiver she thought she used to feel when her first boyfriend arrived at the family home to pick her up. Now more than thirty years beyond such nonsense, the unexpected nervous trill forced a pause, a mere shortening of the rhythm of her step, just as she passed the second door on her left, which looked into the front room, beyond the closed folding doors. There, presenting the back of his large head above the back of a voluminous easy chair that faced into the room, was David, her husband, precisely where she expected to find him, holding the double spread of his broadsheet high up to catch the brighter light of the hallway behind him, absorbed in a minor piece at the foot of page seven, his head gently nodding to the regularity of the Bach fugues that Janet could just hear scratching from within foam pads of his headphones.

“I’ll get it,” she said ritualistically, as she passed the open door, knowing full well he couldn’t hear. Thus she did not even check for a response which even at best would be a minor noise, not quite a grunt and definitely not a word, if, indeed, such a reference to the obvious might merit any recognition.

And so Janet reached the door, a large, wide and heavy hardwood structure, white within and black to the street, hinged on the right, solid panelled in the lower half, but admitting two decorative stained glass panels above, their uneven frosting not allowing any view of those waiting outside, who invariably presented only fuzzed silhouettes against the scattered back-light of the streetlamps. As she turned the latch, Janet’s memory momentarily recreated childhood, prompted by the beautiful symmetry of the diffused street lights and thus reminding her of those same shapes her infancy called ‘angels’ in the frosted glass door of her parents’ suburban semi. Swinging the door open, she smiled at the two priests waiting in the cold and dark of a November evening.

Boniface, the fourth chapter, describes the difficult life of a young teacher in a town near to Migwani. He is chosen by Father Michael to manage one of the Church's projects, but his chapter is primarily concerned with his family relations.

A violent crash shook Boniface out of his dream. He had seen it coming for almost a minute, but had not prepared himself for the shock. The car had laboured to the summit of a shallow rise to reveal a view of the road ahead. In a broad curve it swept across a wide valley, at the bottom of which a grey and narrow concrete bridge contrasted with the brown unedged earth of the rest of their route. On the down slope, Michael pressed his foot to the floor and the car quickly picked up speed. Boniface knew that at the bottom of the valley, where the road crossed a river bed, the junction between the murram of the road and the concrete of the bridge had worn badly, leaving a vertical step between the two surfaces, several inches high in parts. Everyone who travelled the main road knew the spot. Even the more irresponsible bus drivers would slow to a crawl here to negotiate the bump, but could still not prevent the flow of abuse from the rear seats when their vehicles lurched as they crossed onto the bridge and threw the most vulnerable passengers momentarily into the air. There was simply no way of avoiding it.

By the time Michael's car hit the ramp, it was doing fifty miles per hour, but of those inside the car only Josephine, Boniface's wife, seemed concerned by the looming danger. Not until the wheels hit the step and lifted the entire car into the air did either of the men in front of her show any reaction. A split second before impact, she tried to utter a warning shout, but it was already too late. The car hit the ridge, flew into the air and came down with what seemed like a gigantic crash, flinging her from her seat and transforming her intended shout into a long high-pitched scream.

Boniface simply held on. Michael's previously vacant expression disappeared, transformed by the widening of his eyes to one of undiluted shock and surprise. After only a short skid, which the priest quickly and easily controlled, the car sped on without either a word or glance shared. Some moments later, Boniface did turn to face his wife who was bent low over the child in her lap and holding the top of her head which had bumped hard against the roof. He offered a short comforting smile to ease her discomfort and said, “Don't worry, Josephine. Father always drives like this.”

The final chapter introduces Munyasya, an ex-army officer who, late in life, has become destitute. It is his mission, however, which endures, despite being revealed as misguided. He is apparently possessed by the spirit of his long-dead step-father.

In the bottle is my madness, the spirit which haunts me, exhausts me, taunts me, entraps me. I, the hunter, the warrior, am caged like a monkey. Let me free! Let me free to live my own life and die my own death. You hold the key, not I. I would break the lock but I can't find the door. Another drink. Another drink to bring me closer to you, to hold you near until you let me go. Do you hear? You? Nzoka? Do you hear?

He had been ignored until then. Hundreds of people had passed him by, but even those whom he had befriended in the past offered neither greeting nor any sign of recognition. People had met and stood in conversation less than spitting distance from where he lay without even acknowledging his presence. Every muscle in him strained and shook to throw out the sound. His entire skeleton of a body stiffened and convulsed, the words grumbling forth from deep within his squelching chest. Thrown out as if spewed in rejection, the sound bellowed like thunder, chased by its own echo. It demanded attention, and received it, albeit begrudgingly and obliquely. It forced people to react, to look his way and thus acknowledge his presence. At such moments, all conversation, all business stopped for a moment as heads turned towards Munyasya's tree. Those with no direct view craned their necks to see, would jostle for position for just a glimpse, but no-one would want to go too close. No-one would ever answer. No-one would ever intervene.

How to Get Ready For Your New Baby on a Budget

It can be tempting to go overboard when you are expecting a baby as there are so many clothes, toys and accessories available to buy. However in reality newborns don't really need a lot in their first few weeks at home, so if you are on a budget you can just concentrate on buying quality basics. Many of the gadgets and accessories available for babies do make parents lives easier, but they are not really essential. Your baby will be just as happy and content with those basic items they really need. Baby Clothing Think about the time of year your baby will be born. This will help you judge whether you need summer or winter weight clothing. If the weather is cold then you will need one or two newborn hats, as babies can lose a lot of heat from their heads. Socks are also important for warmth so choose around 6 pairs of good quality newborn socks. You will also need at least five rompers suits, or up to 10 if you don't want to spend a lot of time doing laundry. Choose at least 5 baby sleepers or comfortable newborn nightgowns. This is really all you need in terms of clothes for newborn babies, but you can have fun choosing soft, snugly materials and also fun patterns if your budget allows. Baby Bedding You will need a specialist baby crib, cradle or traditional bassinet. Make sure you have at least three fitted sheets. You will also need around 5 lightweight blankets for summer and one or two heavier blankets for colder climates. Newborn babies do not require pillows and avoid overcrowding the crib with lots of stuffed toys. Baby Feeding If you are breastfeeding then it will be much more comfortable for you and your baby if you purchase a proper breast feeding pillow. If you are bottle feeding then you will need around 6 baby bottles. You will also need at least 10 burp cloths for putting over your shoulder whilst you are burping your baby. Diapers and Bath Time Newborns can go through 10 diapers a day so if you are going to use cloth diapers then you need enough to last at least two days at a time. Stock up on disposable diapers when you see them on sale and make sure you have supplies to last you until the next shopping trip. You will use around 1 small pack of disposable wipes or 10 cloth wipes per day, so stock up on these items too. A waterproof pad for diaper changes is essential. For bath time you will need around 4 Baby Wash cloths, a bottle of gentle newborn baby wash and some special baby nail clippers. A digital thermometer will help you ensure the water is at the right temperature. Baby baths are also a safe and easy way to carry out bath time. Quick baby shower registry question..?

When registering for basic things like.. towels, wash cloths, receiving blankets, burp cloths, and things like that.. How many do you scan? I mean if you scan one thing of the sort and one person buys it no one will know you need those types of things because it will come off. But I'm scared if i put the quantity high on them every one will go for that one pattern or print. Also.. I don't want to have a huge registry. I know not every one will go off what I register for but a lot will.

i just had my baby shower and i registered for a few of each and got tons more then i asked for. so pick like 2 packs of washcloths and im sure youll get atleast 4-5. if you want to register for everything you want then pick different patterns cause everything thing has a different bar code so when someone buys something it will be the exact print you wanted.

Hidden Electrical Hazards - Check Your Grounded Outlets

Shock hazards and warranty issues. If you live in an older house, you may be shocked, literally, to discover that your "grounded" (three-pronged) electrical outlets are not really grounded, after all. This article describes why that's a dangerous situation, how to tell if your outlets are really grounded, and what to do if they're not.

The electrical term, open ground, describes a situation where someone has installed a three-pronged outlet, but the cable serving that outlet still contains only two wires, a hot and a neutral, and no ground wire. The three-pronged outlet gives the appearance of an upgrade, but the outlet is not really grounded. This is bad news for two reasons.

Shock hazard

This should be your first concern, and it's a real one: a receptacle that is not properly grounded is a safety hazard to you and your family. A shock from an improperly grounded 120-volt outlet can cause injury, even death. And take note: those receptacle "cheaters," those little, grey three-hole plugs with the tab on them that you screw into the plate? They don't work, and they can present a hazard to you and the equipment you plug into them.

Warranty issues

The following appliances require a grounded receptacle, for both safety and warranty reasons:

- Refrigerator
- Dishwasher
- Washing Machine
- Computer
- Television
- Any piece of equipment with a 3-pronged plug

Plugging any of this equipment into a receptacle that is not grounded can present a shock hazard, can damage the product, and can void the product warranty. Computers have especially sensitive voltage requirements. Note that surge protectors will not work properly unless a ground is present. These appliances and pieces of equipment are not small investments; protect them by using only properly grounded outlets. Where necessary, call in a qualified electrician to run you a new wire.

How to tell if your outlet is really grounded

- You can buy a small, inexpensive, plug-in tester at your local home center or electrical supply store. They are generally fairly reliable.

- You could try cutting the electricity at the breaker, pulling off your outlet cover and having a look, but you may or may not be able to see the cable feeding the outlet. The older the house, the more likely it is to be dark and dirty and hard to see behind the outlet cover. It might be necessary to unscrew and pull out the outlet. Note: this is not recommend as a beginner's DIY project because of the safety hazards involved.

- Why take chances? Hire a pro. If you have any question whether your outlets are properly grounded - or for that matter, if you have any questions about your wiring or your breaker or fuse box - have a qualified electrician come in and take a look.

What to do if your outlet is not properly grounded

If the tester gives you a negative reading, there may be other outlets in the house that aren't grounded. We strongly recommend that you bring in a qualified electrician to assess the situation and recommend next steps.

Next steps could involve running new wire, but possibly not. In some circumstances, electrical code allows for ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection (meaning the installation of a GFCI outlet) where there is no ground; however, the code has very specific requirements about how this must be done, including language that must be displayed prominently on the outlet cover. We do not recommend this as a beginner's DIY project because of the potential safety hazards to you and your family, and the warranty issues with your electrical and electronic equipment, discussed above.

More about wiring in older houses

- A good rule of thumb: If you see wire and it's fabric covered, by all means, have a qualified electrician look at it.

- The Consumer Product Safety Commission and utility companies recommend panel maintenance every three years. Generally, maintenance involves pulling the panel cover, inspecting all breakers and wiring, re-torquing connections, replacing breakers where necessary, and making recommendations about any further service that may be necessary or desirable. Routine maintenance can avoid a lot of problems.

- For homeowners with older wiring for whom rewiring is not an option, your electrician might recommend replacing certain breakers with an arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI). This is a "breaker with a brain," fire protection technology that works just like a regular circuit breaker but also electronically detects arcing. For new construction and significant remodeling, the AFCI is now required for all circuits leading to bedrooms.

Hey Chrome, good question. There are two possibilities. If you're talking about an extension cord and nothing is plugged into the other end, then no, it is not using power. Many things do have something called a, "Phantom Load." This was mentioned in a previous answer refering to VCR's, TV's and other appliances. Anything that can be turned on and off with a remote, anything with a clock built in, like a microwave, and anything with a transformer will be using a small amount of power all the time, even if you turn it off. Your little cell phone charger utilizes what is known as a wall pack transformer. Even with the phone unplugged, it is using about 1 watt 24/7. Not much, but if you look around your home, you probably have 50 phantom loads.

We have a home that is powered by the wind and sun, and phantom loads are a huge problem for people that live on a finite amount of electricity. Our entertainment stand is plugged into a surge arrestor power strip. At night or if we go away, we just turn off the strip. We have another in the kitchen with all those little chargers plugged in, the cordless vacuum, cell phones, razor chargers and such. The strip is on if someone is charging something, the rest of the time it is off.

If you're really curious about power usage around your house, there is a great device called a, "Kill-A-Watt Meter." It looks like a lamp timer, just plug it in, then plug in anything you like, a cell phone charger, or chest freezer. It tells you how much power it is using, and can track it for a week or a month, and tell you how many Kilowatthours it used, or KWH. Then you can look at your electric bill to see how much you pay for a KWH, and figure out exactly how much it costs in dollars and cents to run your freezer, fridge, TV, or whatever. The meter costs about $30 online. Google it and look for some vendors.

If I had a gas dryer can I just cap of those pipes and buy an electric dryer to replace it?

Will I have to buy a special outlet for an electric dryer or will it just plug into the wall and work?

Yes, you will have to have a special outlet for the dryer. Dryers use 220 volts and regular wall outlets supply 110 volts. There should be a valve on the gas line and all that would be required would for you to turn it off, if there is no valve then you will need a plumber to cap off the line or preferably install a valve. You will also need to call an electrician to install a new 220 volt circuit for the dryer.

Embedded Control-Record Layouts Improve Database and RFID Sensor Testing

Software application designers and hardware application developers are working as teams to incorporate control-record layouts into end-to-end XML services for RFID networks.  Using these newly formed XML tag sets made up of customized control-records has improved the design and development scenarios across diverse hardware platforms, operating systems, applications, and databases.

As software application developers begin to build RFID-and-sensor networks within key growth areas, it has become common place to witness recent deployments of control-record structures embedded in sensors and their supporting software. These control records contribute immensely to the major functions of any RFID sensor application including inputs, data-lookup and storage, interface programming and outputs.  

These five major features are now incorporated into the application as a new and more efficient XML and database schema. This improved configuration has proven to meet growing demands to test multi-vendor RFID and sensor products for their ability to withstand extreme conditions.  These conditions include excessive heat and cold, shock, humidity, vibration, altitude, pressure and all are reliably monitored using the new control-record layout approach.

The key design feature in the programming arrangement described in this article is the idea that an intermediate control record receives and distributes signals to and from the software and hardware sides of the full application. This nicely integrates selected signals from both spheres of operation and allows an interface to adapt dynamically to different device types. As new devices are attached and configured with the application, no appreciable interference is noticed in the originally attached devices.

Because the embedded layout of many types of devices can be addressed through the use of control records, new applications are provided with better XML testing languages. Additionally, this feature provides designers with the opportunity to introduce database simulators for a more accurate and dynamic portrayal of RFID and Sensor operation.  This dynamic portrayal is added to the accumulated testing history and a better picture of performance emerges.

As RFID becomes more widely deployed, network reliability, security, and data integrity become increasingly critical. And for most companies, the task of ensuring those three things will be overwhelming and complex, especially across multiple hardware platforms and configurations and diverse supplier and partner networks and databases.

But because it is now feasible to virtually attach these control-record layouts to alleviate some of the major complexities associated with the required tests, any company can develop new products that may have been prohibitive in the past.
